Are There Waterproof Lash Adhesive for Eyelash Extensions?

This is the most commonly asked question by many lash lovers and clients, as they all want to know if they can get their lashes wet. The simple answer is yes and no. There are a few factors to consider before you can explain this concept fully to your clients

Woman in the shower getting lash adhesive wet. Cartel Lash

If you were to tell your clients that the glue is waterproof they may get the wrong impression that they can shower right away, for as long as they want and soak their eyelash extensions in water, with little or no affect to their sets and still look super fresh and new. This can be confusing because lash artists advise clients to regularly wash their eyelashes, but remember this is only for short periods of time with lots of TLC. Ultimately, giving your clients a well rounded answer will help them take care of their lashes and increase the longevity of their sets.

Taking the time to explain first what lash adhesives are, the factors that affect its bond, and what helps strengthen the bond can help increase lash retention and overall customer satisfaction.

What is lash adhesive?

Eyelash glue is used to bond eyelash extensions to natural eyelashes. It is specially formulated with cyanoacrylate, a fast drying bonding agent, which is responsible for holding the lash extensions in place. In order to kick start the curing process of your lash glue, it needs the right amount of moisture in the air. This is why the ideal humidity and temperature is critical in your lash space.

That being said, you shouldn’t saturate your client’s eyelashes with water or it will affect the retention in a negative way. This means too much moisture will cure the glue too quickly causing weak bonds and premature fallout. Oftentimes as a precaution, lash artists will tell clients to avoid getting their extensions wet for at least 24 hours to avoid this very problem and to ensure the curing process is complete.

Is lash adhesive waterproof?

The biggest misconception is that clients cannot have a bath or shower when they have eyelash extensions. This is NOT true! However, as mentioned earlier, as a precaution you should advise your clients to keep their lashes dry for 24 to 48 hours after the lash application.

Why? The chemical process of curing each layer can take hours to complete. During lashing, the exterior layer of the glue is dry, so you can continue applying the next extension, but the inner layers are not fully cured. Interrupting this process, of the individual layers curing, could play a big role in poor retention.

Water resistant

That being said, if your clients are careful they can still have a shower and most importantly, clean their eyelashes. You need to emphasize the importance of cleaning their eyelashes and a proper aftercare routine to help their lashes last long.

Can be oil resistant

The eyelash extension glue is fully cured and dry after 48 hours. The bond is strong at this point, but it can still become brittle and break down if not taken care of.

Tell your clients to wash and clean their eyelashes daily to remove all dirt and oil accumulated in their lash line. Even though the lash glue is cured, it can still break down when too much oil and dirt build and are not removed.

What helps lash adhesive with retention

All lash artists strive to provide beautiful eyelashes and amazing service. However, there are things we cannot always control, like for example, what our clients do after they leave their appointment. Their daily routines, how they sleep, and their overall lifestyle will greatly affect the bond of the adhesive.

For this very reason it is vital to your business to provide aftercare expertise to ensure quality retention. Keeping your clients up to date with how and why they need to regularly clean their lashes is important but here are 2 products that can help strengthen the lash bonds during application.

Lash adhesive accelerants

A lash adhesive accelerant is used to speed up the curing process of the lash glue you used. The great thing about accelerants is it doesn’t cause shock polymerization which can weaken the bond of the adhesive. Not only will your application time be shorter but the use of an accelerator will boost the overall curing time of the adhesive ensuring your adhesive has added protection from exposure to too much moisture (within that initial 24-48 hours window).

Apply the lash glue accelerant to the strip of lash extensions. You need to work hand in hand with your lash adhesive for this. Keep applying the accelerator frequently, every 45 minutes to an hour.

Ruthie Belle - Adhesive Superdry

Ruthie Belle Adhesive Superdry is both an eyelash adhesive accelerator and a lash primer. A lash primer is usually used before applying lash extensions to remove any remaining residue and to create an ideal pH level for retention. While a lash accelerator is used during application to speed up the curing process. Combining both lash primer and accelerator could save you a lot of time, money and effort.

Ruthie Belle Adhesive Superdry contains natural extracts to nourish your client’s natural lashes while strengthening the bond of the lash adhesive you used. For easy application, Ruthie Belle Adhesive Superdry comes with a brush. However, for hygienic purposes artists may opt to use a single use lint free applicator instead.

If you want to cure the adhesive instantly, cover 1mm to 2mm of the lash extensions with this primer/accelerator while it is still on the lash strip. This go-to adhesive Superdry can really come to the rescue if you are having trouble maintaining an optimum humidity range.

The best lash adhesive for retention

Another way for you to help make sure the lash extensions you apply on your clients stay for a long time is by using good-quality and professional eyelash extension glue. There are many lash adhesives with amazing retention available in the market and it can be confusing to choose the right one. Here are my top 3 picks:

Ruthie Belle - Dark Matter

Ruthie Belle Dark Matter is an oil-resistant and quick drying lash glue. It only needs half a second to 1 second in order to bond and set. It has thin viscosity and medium elasticity making it easier to use. Dark Matter is ideal for intermediate to advanced lash techs. It contains castor oil which is known to have nourishing properties which promote eyelash growth and healthy skin.

A simple small dot of Ruthie Belle Dark Matter can last up to 5 hours. Making it very convenient and cost-efficient.

LBLA Superhero Adhesive (5ml)

Similar to Dark Matter, LBLA Superhero Adhesive only needs half a second up to 1 second to dry. This is ideal for advanced technicians and even some intermediate with great precision and speed. It has minimum fumes which are ideal for clients with sensitive skin.

It has a very thin consistency and seamless black color with a flexible structure making it easy to use and apply. The amazing part of this lash glue is that the retention can last up to 8 weeks if properly stored and if a daily aftercare routine is followed. This is very beneficial for your clients that like to go longer between fills.

If you are looking for an eyelash adhesive with a bond that can last up to 2 months and doesn’t cause eye tearing, LBLA Superhero Adhesive is for you.

LASHGOD Supernatural Bond

Looking for a lash glue free from any formaldehyde, latex, or any irritating smell, LASHGOD Supernatural Bond is the one you need. This lash glue is oil-resistant and only needs 0.2 second up to 0.5 second to dry. Due to its exceptional quick dry time, you need to be a certified expert lash artist to be able to fully maximize its use.

It has high elasticity and medium viscosity. The fumes coming from this lash adhesive are super low, making this ideal for clients super sensitive to fumes and other irritants. Supernatural Bond has a jet black color and has a long shelf life

To help the retention, it comes with carrot seed oil to increase lash retention and strengthen lash bonds. The time you spend on every service will be greatly reduced, freeing up more time for you to accept more clients.

There are still a lot of misconceptions when it comes to lash extensions making many newbies hesitant to get them. It is your responsibility, as the lash tech, to answer all your client’s questions and make them feel at ease. You might be surprised at how many new loyal clients you will gain with just a bit of explaining and patience.

Drying or Curing for Lash Extensions: What’s the Difference

Learning new things is always a good thing. Whether you are new to the lash industry or an expert lash artist, understanding what happens in an eyelash extension application is always important.

Lash artists always mention curing and drying when they talk about eyelash glue and adhesive. Aren’t they the same? No, my friend. Curing and drying are not the same. There are differences in the process. It is ideal for all lash lovers and technicians to understand drying and curing and how it affects your lash extensions.

Many lash lovers think that all the lash technicians have to do is dip the extension into the glue then apply. The process of the whole application is more than that. That is why I am here to help you identify the difference between drying and curing, the process behind each, and the factors that can affect the retention of the lash glue.

What is drying?

Drying is when the exterior or the outer layer of the adhesive dries just enough for the lash technician to continue applying more lash extensions. If the lash adhesive is not dry enough, there is a tendency that lash extensions will clump together and get stuck with neighboring lashes.

The more technical explanation is that drying is a process in which the chemical ingredients in the adhesive evaporate in the air making it harder and easier to work with. When the adhesive is dry, the lash technician can move on to the next lash extension, safely.

There are quick-drying lash adhesives available in the market, like Untamed Artistry Retention Black Adhesive and LBLA Superhero Adhesive. These types of adhesive dry in 1 second, letting the lash technician apply lash extensions faster. However, for beginner lash technicians, it might be too quick-drying. Make sure to choose the adhesive that fits your comfort and skill level.

What is curing?

Curing explains the chemical process the adhesive takes going from a liquid to a solid form.  The curing process needs moisture in the air to fully dry all the layers of the adhesive. Usually, it takes at least 24 hours up to 48 hours to thoroughly cure the adhesive. During this time, it is VERY IMPORTANT to make sure the adhesive doesn’t make contact with water.

This is the main reason why lash artists tell their clients to not go swimming within 24 to 48 hours after the application. If the client lets their eyelash extensions get wet within this duration, it can cause premature fallout of the lash extensions. Avoid any hot and humid places

The curing process will greatly depend on the moisture in the air and humidity. Because the moisture in the air will help cure the lash glue and dry quicker.

Why is it important to thoroughly cure the lash adhesive? Because it will affect the retention of the adhesive. If your lash adhesive is not properly cured, the lash extensions will not last that long. Your money will go to waste.

How does humidity affect lash glue and retention?

Adhesives become less effective when the humidity is high without the right care and treatment. The optimal humidity for the majority of lash glues available in the market is between 45% and 65%.

In general, when the humidity is too low, the curing speed of the lash adhesive slows down which might lead to blooming. This usually happens when the humidity is lower than 45%. The fumes coming from the adhesive will transfer to the client’s eyes causing irritation, burning, inflammation, and tearing. The problem is, when this happens it will be a nasty cycle of blooming. Remember, when there is water, the lash adhesive will go. In addition, the lash extensions might end up clamping together, leaning, or slipping if the humidity is too low.

Meanwhile, when the humidity is too high, the curing process will be too quick leading to poor eyelash extensions attachment. There is a chance when the lash adhesive might be partially cured even before the lash artist starts attaching the extensions. It can also lead to a clumpy look and leave adhesive beads in the client’s eyes. If the adhesive cure quickly, it might not fully wrap around the client’s natural eyelashes causing the clumpy look and beads to form. This is not pleasing to the eyes and I’m sure your client will not be happy about this.

Blooming might also happen when the humidity is too high, above 65%.

What is the ideal humidity for a lash room?

The ideal humidity in the lash room should be between 45% and 65% range in order to enjoy the optimum performance of the lash adhesives. You can also check the features of the lash adhesive before application to know exactly what is the optimum humidity range.

Bbluv Hygrometer for lash extensions treatment. Cartel Lash

I understand that each lash room might have different humidity and temperature. That is why it is imperative to have the right tools so your adhesive will cure properly, the lash extensions will last, and your clients will be happy with your service. And to properly measure the temperature and humidity in the lash room, it is very important to use BBLUV Hygrometer and Thermometer

This tool is an alarm clock, digital thermometer, and hygrometer all in one. You can time yourself to know how long it takes for you to apply lash extensions and get the temperature and humidity in your lash room. Use it in your lash room to help make sure the temperature and humidity is the most ideal environment for the eyelash extension application.

Can you speed up the curing process?

Yes, you can! All you need is to use a nano mister. Nano misters are the easiest and faster way to add moisture to the air which speeds the curing process of the eyelash glue. Pair your hygrometer with a nano mister to maintain the ideal humidity in your lash room. Use it when the humidity is too low.

If you are using a nano mister, make sure that you are not pointing it too near to your client’s eyes. Hold it at a reasonable height, at least 15 inches over your client’s eyelashes. Turn the nano mister on. Don’t over-expose the lash adhesives to the nano mister. Sometimes, nano misters automatically turn off around 30 seconds. If your nano mister is not like this, turn it off manually at 30 seconds.

There are other advantages of using nano mister in your lash room aside from speeding up the curing process. For example, it minimizes the fumes emitting into the air which is the common cause of eye irritation. And, this is the best news for all lash lovers, using nano misters can reduce the waiting time required to get your eyelashes wet. Your clients will not have to wait for 24 hours up to 48 hours. You, the lash technician, will have fewer things to worry about!

But make sure not to overuse your nano mister because it might cause problems like weakening of the adhesive’s retention.

The curing and drying time of the lash adhesives will greatly affect its retention and how long the eyelash extensions last. It is best to know how factors like humidity and temperature can affect your glue and what are the tools you can use to help you out.

Know the Shelf Life of Your Lash Extensions Supplies

Did you know expiration dates are not only applicable to food but also to your lash supplies? If you are not sure if the supplies you have in your storage are still usable, it is best to check their expiration date and shelf life. Check every product you have in your storage and make sure each one is still usable. Remember, the supplies and lash products you use on your clients can affect the retention and quality of the eyelash extensions you applied to your clients.

Why proper storage is important

Looking after all the products and materials you use is very important to build a good image for your lash business. When all the lash supplies are properly cared for and stored, they will maintain their quality. Meaning, the services you offer will be consistent. Unlike when the products you use are not well taken care of.

For example, if your lash glue is not stored in a cool dry area, it can negatively affect the retention of the lash glue.

Meanwhile, if the tools you use are not properly cleaned and maintained, your accuracy, efficiency, and speed will be affected. Be sure to equally take care of your tools as well.

Lash Adhesive: Unopened 6 months

Lash adhesive is one of the most important lash supplies you need to check regularly. The quality of the lash glue you are using will affect the lifespan of the eyelash extensions you apply.

Different lash adhesives have different manufacturers and ingredients. Hence, each has different expiration dates as well. In general, lash adhesives when unopened and stored in a cool and dry place, can last up to 6 months. Open adhesive that is stored in a cool and dry place, can last 4-6 weeks. That being said, the temperature and humidity of your storage can also affect the condition of your adhesive.

Remember, the main ingredient in all lash adhesives is cyanoacrylate which is known to break down over time. The longer you store your lash adhesive in a not-so-ideal environment can cause cyanoacrylate to break down faster affecting the bond. Also, all the ingredients will start to separate as time goes by, weakening the bond.

No matter how you store your lash adhesive, I highly recommend shaking it well before using it. This is to ensure all the ingredients are properly emulsified (mixed).

Lash Bonder: up to 6 months

Lash bonder is specifically formulated to speed up the curing process of the lash adhesive. It instantly cures the bond from outside to inside. Because of the fast curing process, your client will not feel any irritation from the fumes that may come from the adhesive.

Just like lash adhesives, the manufacturer, humidity, and temperature can greatly affect the storage life of your lash bonder. It can last up to 6 months. But for the exact product shelf life, it is best to check the information on that particular bonder. Some lash bonders can only last up to 3 months while some can last up to 6 months.

Lash Cleansers: 6-9 months

Aftercare treatment and the daily routine of your clients can greatly affect the retention of their eyelash extensions. It is important for you to let your clients know that their cleansers from last year will not be as effective now compared to when they first bought them, but this really depends on the date they were first opened.

Lash cleansers are also important in all lash extension applications. You need to thoroughly clean your client’s eyelashes and lash line before the application. Clean eyelashes and lash lines mean the adhesive will bond better and longer.

Woman getting eyelashes cleaned for eyelash extension procedure. Cartel Lash

That is why you need to make sure your lash cleansers are always fresh. The ingredients used to make lash cleansers that you love, such as green tea extracts, cucumber, and aloe vera, can soil over time.

Try to finish a bottle first before opening another one. However, if you are not able to do so, a good rule of thumb is to replace your opened bottle every 6 to 9 months.

Lash Remover: up to 6 months

The lifespan and shelf life of the lash remover will depend on the manufacturer and the environment it is stored in. When the bottle of cream type lash remover is unopened, typically it can last up to 2 years but once opened, you need to use it within 6 months. Again, I suggest checking the manufacturer’s notes to make sure you are not using expired eyelash adhesive remover.

When you are using liquid or gel type lash glue removers, unopened products can last up to 1 year. But when the bottle is opened, it can last up to 6 months if stored in the right conditions.

Lash artist removing eyelash extensions with lash tweezers. Cartel Lash

If your lash remover is not as effective, it will be hard for you to remove all the lash extensions you applied. You will need to apply the lash remover many times to remove all the eyelash extensions. Pulling or rubbing can cause the natural eyelashes to be damaged or make your client uncomfortable. Using old removers overall is a bad idea. Make sure to check your lash remover first before using, consider applying the remover to 1 extension first to check its effectiveness.

For best results, store your lash remover away from direct sunlight. Keep it in a cool and dry place.

Lash Primer: up to 6 months

Lash primers usually contain alcohol which helps it last up to 3 years when the bottle is unopened. If the bottle is opened it can last up to 6 months depending on the environment it is stored in.

Primers help dissolve all the natural oils and any leftover makeup residue in your client’s natural eyelashes. Eyelash primers also help balance the pH level of your natural lashes. Resulting in a better bond between your client’s natural eyelashes and the lash extensions. Lash primers are used to ensure longer and better retention of the eyelash extensions.

Woman with blue eyes and natural eyelash extensions. Cartel Lash

Make sure to check the shelf life of your lash primers before using them.

When to replace lash supplies?

Replace your lash supplies when they are beyond the shelf life indicated by the manufacturer. You have to keep your lash salon and business as hygienic and clean as possible and utilize proper storage practices for all your supplies. This will give a good image for yourself as a lash artist and salon.

Maintaining quality and fresh lash supplies will also reflect your work ethic. It will show your clients that you put their needs and comfort first. Being mindful of your supplies and the individual shelf life will greatly impact your thriving lash business.

Eyelash Extensions - Benefits and Usage

The benefits of eyelash extensions are many and include giving your eyelashes a longer, thicker and more natural appearance. Apart from this, they make the eyes seem more open and have an enlarged look thus drawing people's attention to them. For those with drooping eyelids, the longer eyelashes will make them look younger and fresher. Since not all people have long eyelashes naturally, there are a number of eyelash products in the market to help them.

In order to make the best selection, it is important that the user understands eyelash growth. Just like hair in your body, eyelashes are affected by genetics and that is why many people do not have longer eyelashes. The regrowth period of eyelashes, also depend on some factors such as the size of hair that you have lost as well as the genetics. There are a times where the individual cannot stimulate the eyelash growth and they may need to go for fake eyelashes to give them a more enhanced look.

Among these products is eyelash extensions. They give the users longer and thicker eyelashes and come with different lasting periods but most of them can last up to 2 months. This means that it is a better option as compared to other eyelash growth products. In the market, different manufacturers of eyelash extensions are available and therefore the user needs to know the pros and cons of each in order to make the right selection. Since eyelash extensions are available in different lengths, the user is able to select as per their needs. Whatever the choice they make, they should ensure that these eyelash extensions are approved by the FDA for medical and cosmetic use. The other thing to keep in mind is that these longer eyelashes should not cause any damages to the natural eyelashes.
