How To Sanitize Your Lash Extension Supplies

Lash technicians work directly with clients’ eyelashes and eyes. These delicate areas are very sensitive and prone to infection or irritation. As a lash tech, you need to work on your client’s eyelash extensions with precision, care, and speed while using products that are safe around the eyes.

Having said that, the quality of your eyelash extension supplies and the beautiful lash extensions are not the only important factors your clients look for.

SAFETY is their #1 priority. And if it isn’t yours, it should be!

Lash extension supplies must be clean during eyelash extension procedure. Cartel Lash

Aside from washing your hands before lashing, you should be cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and sterilizing all the tools and equipment you use throughout the day.

This may not be at the top of your must-do list. But we cannot stress this enough, clean your supplies properly! THIS IS SO SO SO IMPORTANT! If you are not sure where to begin, here is a great resource to start from.

What is the importance of proper sanitization of lash extension supplies?

Before proceeding to the steps for sanitizing your workspace and lash extension supplies, we will let you know first what sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization are and why they are important.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”. Some may have even seen this saying posted in their classroom during their preschool years.

Proper hygiene and sanitation are very important to all people, most especially to lash technicians who work on the eyelashes which are close to one of the most sensitive organs in the body, the eyes. This is why proper hygiene is important.

Here are the 3 terms to know and understand as well as how to put them into practice.

Sanitization

Hand washing is always the best way to remove harmful germs from your skin, but if you are not able to do that right away, the next best thing is to use hand sanitizer. During sanitization, many germs or pathogens are killed and reduced to a safe level.

Before and after your eyelash extension application, wash your hands using antibacterial soap. For best results, wash your hands for 20 seconds continuously under warm running water. Don’t forget to clean under your nails and around the back of your fingers and hands!

Infographic on how to properly wash your hands before cleaning lash extension supplies. Cartel Lash

Disinfection

Everything you and your client touched should be disinfected to inactivate all the pathogens. Remember, during disinfection, pathogens became inactive, NOT killed. Disinfect them for at least 30 seconds. This includes the chairs, tables, door handles, lash supplies and tools, pillows, nano misters, and lamps. Disinfect all high traffic or touch surfaces before every client.

Sterilization

During sterilization, inert microorganisms, allergens, and dust are removed from all the surfaces in your lash supplies, tools, workstation, and salon. You don’t need to sterilize your whole salon all the time. Instead, sterilize the lash extension supplies and tools you use directly to the eyes- especially your tweezers!

After sterilizing your eyelash extension supplies and tools, keep them in a dust-free container until you need to use them again.

How to keep your work area and lash extension supplies clean?

To avoid committing the same mistakes over and over, it is important to know how to keep your workstation and lash extension supplies clean from the very beginning.

Before every lash extension application, you need to check all the lash extension supplies and tools you will be using. All of these should be cleaned, sanitized, disinfected, and sterilized before use.

Lash tech holding lash extension supplies and tweezers. Cartel Lash

During the application, always have a cleaning solution and disposable wipes or paper towels close to you at all times. If any of your single-use items fall on the ground, DO NOT use them again. The 5-second rule is not applicable!

Arrange your work area in a way that you can reach all the supplies and tools you need without leaving the room. An organized supply cart or trolley is a must.

After the eyelash extension application, gather all supplies and tools you used and clean your workstation. Throw away all the disposable items. Clean, disinfect, and sanitize before your next client. For items you need to sterilize, set a timer. The solution you use will have the exact time and procedures to follow. If you are busy you want to make sure you don’t forget!

When disinfecting, use a certified and effective solution, such as PREempt CS20 and RTU Accel PREVention. Read the label in your disinfectant solution and follow the instructions. Some solutions might need to be rinsed while others do not. Let air dry.

Steps to cleaning your lash extension supplies

To clean and disinfect your eyelash extension supplies in Canada, you need to follow these steps. Remember not all lash extension supplies and tools you used should be cleaned and disinfected, some should be thrown away after one use. Lash extension supplies and tools such as tapes, disposable mascara wands, glue wipes, cotton pads, and glue rings should be thrown away.

While lash supplies and tools like lash tweezers, lash mirrors, and jade stones should follow these steps:

Step 1: Pre-treatment

Get your antibacterial soap and water and start scrubbing. Remove all the visible dirt and debris stuck into your lash tweezers. Make sure to check in between the tips.

Step 2: Rinse

Rinse the lash extension supplies and tools using running lukewarm water. Get a clean towel and wipe your eyelash tweezers dry.

Step 3: Disinfect

Get your trusted disinfectant solution and soak your tweezers. Use a small container where your lash supplies and tools can be fully flat and submerged in the solution.

Read and follow the instructions in your disinfectant solution.

Disinfecting lash extension supplies is important to avoid irritation. Cartel Lash

Step 4: Dry

Remove the lash extension supplies and tools in the container using clean tongs or gloves to avoid recontamination. Rinse with water. Get a new clean and disposable towel and dry your tools. Some disinfectant solutions will require you to rinse the solution off before drying. Read the instructions properly.

You can also air-dry your lash extension supplies and tools between two clean towels.

Step 5: Storage

Last but most important of all, storage. Choose a clean and disinfected container or drawer and put your lash supplies and tools inside.

For lash adhesives, you can wipe the storage container with disinfectant wipes and then let them air dry before storing.

Quality disinfecting in lash extension supplies is a must

Proper hygiene practices are very important to all lash technicians. You need to keep in mind that you will be working close to the eyes which are known for being sensitive. If you use unsanitized lash extension supplies and tools, there is a big chance that your client’s eyes will be infected and irritated.

Poor cleaning practices for eyelash extension applications can cause a spread of infection between your clients. This can hinder your lash salon’s growth and tarnish your reputation.

We all work hard to get to where we are now. It will be a huge waste of your time, effort, and money if you do not practice proper hygiene and disinfecting procedures to prevent any contamination, irritation, and accidents from happening. In addition, all the lash tools you use are not cheap, it is best to keep them in tip-top shape to make sure they last long.

We highly recommend following the necessary steps in making sure your workspace and lash extension supplies and tools are properly cleaned, sanitized, disinfected, and sterilized. It will only take a few minutes before and after each appointment. But these few minutes will ensure your clients feel safe and taken care of, this is beneficial for your client relationships as well as your brand reputation.

Eyelash Extensions: Which Curl and Length is Best

As a lash tech, you should have a wide variety of eyelash extensions at your disposal. This way, you will always be prepared for clients who want different lash extensions. During your client consultation you will be able to decide which extension to use based on the curl, length, and thickness.

Remember, clients will have different preferences and will want a specific type of look or set. But don’t worry! Here are the common eyelash extensions the majority of your clients will go for.

Types of lash curls for eyelash extensions

Because of the increasing demand for eyelash extensions, the need for different variations to meet the different eye shapes arises. There are a wide variety of eyelash extensions depending on the curl type. It's important to remember that manufacturers may label their curls differently and have slight variations in the overall curvature but, generally speaking, across most manufacturers these variations are easy to differentiate.

Eyelash extension curl types. Cartel Lash

As a lash tech, here are the most common curls you need to know when buying eyelash extensions supplies:

B Curl

B curl lash extensions are pretty simple but provide a bit of curl. Not too exaggerated and not too flat. The finish look is natural with a soft curl. They are ideal for clients with straight natural eyelashes that point straight or slightly upwards.

They are also used by lash artists for inner corner lashes. They are not ideal for clients with heavily downward eyes or natural lashes.

C Curl

Also known as the common curl, C curl lash extensions have a curl closer or similar to natural lashes. They are ideal for clients with a slight curl in their natural eyelashes.

If your client has straight natural eyelashes, when you use C curl, it will give them a doll or an open eye effect. Meanwhile, if your client has slightly downward angled eyelashes, C curl will provide a slight lash lift effect.

However, if your client has heavily downward angled eyelashes, do not use C curl, as you will need a more pronounced curl. I recommend using a CC or D curl.

Woman with finished eyelash extensions. Cartel Lash

CC Curl

CC curl is a hybrid curl. It tends to be a happy medium between a C and D curl. This type of curl has the same base as the C curl and finishes with a dramatic flair of a D curl.

This curl works great to add lift to the outer edges of your set, especially with clients that have downward or droopy looking eyes.

D Curl

D curl provides more drama and has a visible curl. If your client has straight or downward angle natural eyelashes, go for D curl.

When you use D curl lashes on clients with downward angle natural lashes, it will have an open eye effect. While when used on clients with horizontal angled natural lashes, it gives a lovely doll eye effect.

It is very important not to use D curl lash extensions on clients with upward angle natural lashes and hooded eyelids because there is a possibility that it will poke your clients’ eyes (depending on the length you use).

J Curl

J curl lashes are the most natural curl on our list and a must have in your lash supplies. This is ideal for clients with straight natural lashes pointing straight or upward. If your client is looking for an everyday natural look, the J curl should be considered.

Do not use J curl lash extensions on clients with heavily hooded angle natural lashes.

L+ Curl Lashes

L curl has the most curl on our list. It has a flat base with a harsh upward curl. It is ideal for clients with deep set eyes, hooded eyes, and droopy eyelids.

If your client wants drama, add L+ curl lashes to your list of curl types you can consider. It also offers the most visible eyelid lift effect.

But keep in mind, do not use L+ curl on clients with downward angle natural eyelashes.

Choosing the style and length for eyelash extensions

When you are deciding the eyelash extensions’ length and diameter (thickness) you need to first consider the condition of your client’s natural eyelashes. Too heavy of a set on unhealthy or brittle natural eyelashes will cause breakage. This is not good for your client’s natural eyelashes.

Eyelash extension thickness and length guide. Cartel Lash

Here are some guidelines to help guide your client as their lash tech:

Length

It is very normal for clients to want long lashes. However, clients have different natural eyelash conditions which will determine the best and most practical length to work with.

Remember, it is your responsibility to guide and explain to your clients why a certain length is more ideal for the condition of their natural lashes. It is super important to protect the health of your client’s natural lashes and to avoid premature fallout or damage to their natural lashes by picking a length that wont hinder its growth cycle.

For clients with hooded or droopy eyelids, you can go for lash extensions that are slightly longer than their natural lashes. Because their eyelashes tend to hide under their eyelids when they open their eyes.

Keep in mind, the stronger the curl of the lash extensions are, the shorter they will look. Make sure to choose the length of the eyelash extensions based on the curl type you are going to use.

Diameter or thickness

The set your client wants will generally determine the diameter you will use. For classic sets you will use 0.15 extensions (in special cases you may need to use 0.10) and for volume sets you can use 0.07, 0.05 or 0.03 extensions.

When picking the diameter for volume there are a few factors to consider, how full your client wants their set, the health of their natural lashes and the number of extensions per fan. Clients with healthy lashes will be able to support more weight and bigger fans, having said that, fuller volume sets require the use of thinner extensions like 0.03’s.

For Classic Sets, you would want to compare the thickness of your client’s natural eyelashes with your lash extensions. This is the best way to determine and estimate the thickness or diameter of the eyelash extensions you will use for your client.

Lifestyle and preference

More and more people now realize the importance of being active. A lot of people are wondering if they can have eyelash extensions even though they always run, swim, or work out. The short answer is yes, of course, they can!

As a lash tech, it is your responsibility to explain to your clients that lash extensions are not as fragile as they think they are. Make sure to ask your clients what type of exercises they do and how often they do them. Also, it is your duty to inform them of how to take care of their lashes after an application with the proper lash supplies so their extensions don’t get damaged and fall off prematurely.

Eyelash extensions aftercare instructions for clients. Cartel Lash

For example, for those clients who like to run, jog, hike, and anything that makes them sweat, it is very important to let them know NOT to get their eyelash extensions wet 24 to 48 hours after the application. After that waiting period, they can start exercising as long as they make sure to clean their eyelashes daily. Explain the importance of having a daily aftercare routine.

For swimmers, DON’T get your eyelashes wet for 24 to 48 hours after the application. This is very important. And whatever happens, let your clients know not to rub their eyes. They can wear goggles in order to protect their eyes from irritation.

It is very important to consider your client’s lifestyle and preferences when choosing eyelash extensions. Always consider their natural eyelashes first before giving any advice and starting application.

If you haven't already encountered a client with sensitive eyes, don’t worry you will very soon.  People with allergies and sensitivities are no different, they would love to have beautifully thick and long eyelashes just like everyone else!

Because the eye area is very sensitive and any slight movement can cause irritation or eye tearing, we as lash artists need to be extra careful.  You can’t use any lash supplies without first checking if it is safe to use around the eye area.

Here is my compilation of 12 of the best lash supplies you should always have on hand for your clients’ sensitive eye areas! This will make your life (and theirs) so much easier.

Eyelash Maker - Cleanser

Cleaning the eyelashes before application is a very important step. However, there are cleansers that dry out the natural eyelashes too much causing them to become brittle and lose their shine. But when you use Eyelash Maker Cleanser, you won’t have to worry about that!

Eyelash Maker Cleanser is a mild and gentle lash cleanser that can thoroughly remove all dirt, debris, and oil stuck on your client’s eyelashes. When you use it, you can be sure it will not cause any eye irritation or tearing.

Product highlights:

  • Deep cleaning
  • Gentle
  • Ideal for sensitive skin and eyes

Because of its mild and gentle formulation, Eyelash Maker Cleanser is the perfect match for clients with sensitive eyes and skin! Meaning this product is the perfect addition to your lash supplies.

Borboleta Lash Bath - Foam Cleanser

Using cleansers is very important not only for the proper attachment of lash extensions but also for the aftercare routine of your clients. All lash lovers should know using the right lash cleanser is necessary to ensure their lash extensions last longer and also keep their natural eyelashes nourished. This is where Borboleta Lash Bath Foam Cleanser can help.

If you use this foam cleanser before attaching lash extensions, it will thoroughly remove all dirt, debris, and oil stuck in your lash line to avoid eyelash mites. Meanwhile, when your clients use Borboleta Lash Bath Foam Cleanser daily for their aftercare routine, their natural eyelashes will be conditioned and cleansed.

Product highlights:

  • Gentle
  • Hydrates the natural eyelashes
  • Eyelid foam cleanser
  • Removes leftover makeup
  • Ideal for sensitive skin and eyes

Ruthie Belle - Clean 11 Foam

Another cleanser made it to this list, the Ruthie Belle Clean 11 Foam. What sets this apart from other cleansers is that it is pH balanced. Meaning it will not dehydrate your client’s natural eyelashes and skin. In addition, it contains tea tree oil which prevents pore-clogging.

This is very important while applying lash extensions. Pore clogging is the common cause of eye irritation, redness, and even inflammation. The use of this cleanser can help decrease the chances of irritation on your clients.

Product highlights:

  • Can be used for the eye area and the entire face
  • Contains tea tree oil
  • pH balanced
  • Prevents inflammation
  • Effective in removing waterproof mascara
  • Ideal for clients with sensitive skin

Ruthie Belle Clean 11 Foam has been formulated to effectively remove all dirt, debris, and oil from the eyelashes. Even waterproof mascara can be removed without rubbing!

Dr. Belter Make-up Remover

Removing eye makeup is very important both for effectively attaching lash extensions and for your client’s daily aftercare routine. However, if your client wears contact lenses regularly, using any old makeup remover might be a problem. People who always wear contact lenses are more prone to eye dryness, puffiness, and irritation.

With Dr. Belter Makeup Remover, you won’t have to worry about eye puffiness and irritation. You can easily remove all the eye makeup when you use this remover.

Product highlights:

  • Oil-free
  • Ideal for sensitive skin
  • Can reduce wrinkles and puffiness around the eye area
  • Relieved eye dryness

Dr. Belter Makeup Remover is 100% oil-free so you can be sure the lash adhesive in your client’s eyelashes will not be damaged.

Borboleta Break Down - Makeup Remover

Oil is usually a common cause of poor retention. When you use oil-based makeup removers to remove all the eye makeup in your client’s eyelashes, some oil residue will be left. You can remove leftover oil by using foam cleansers before applying lashes. But what happens when your client uses oil-based makeup removers daily? The bond will start to break and the lash extensions will fall off prematurely.

The makeup remover you and your client use to remove eye makeup is very important. Use Borboleta Break Down Makeup Remover! It is 100% oil-free and formulated with fatty acids. When the solution comes into contact with the makeup, it emulsifies and dissolves all residue. Even the hard-to-remove waterproof makeup can be removed by this remover. This is definitely a must-have product in your lash supplies for you and your clients.

Product highlights:

  • 100% oil-free
  • Formulated with fatty acids
  • Moisturizes the skin

When Borboleta Break Down Makeup Remover is used, it doesn’t strip the moisture in your client’s skin and even leaves a soft youthful glow.

Nichiban - Sensitive Tape (Japan)

Separating the top and bottom lashes is a must before and during lashing to avoid crisscrossed eyelashes and gluing your client’s eyelids shut. Taping is also a very useful method when needing to isolate hard-to-reach lashes.

Nichiban Sensitive Tape is a medical-grade tape with enough stickiness and strength to hold the bottom lashes while you work on the top eyelashes. And when you remove the tape, it will not leave any sticky residue on the bottom lashes. In addition, it will not hurt your client when you peel it off.

Product highlights:

  • Medical grade tape
  • Soft and flexible
  • Lint-free and cotton-free

This tape is 100% lint-free and cotton-free with a soft exterior.

Silicone Clear Gel Tape

The common problem with using tape is the pain or discomfort your client feels when you have to peel it off. Tape is not only painful to remove but it can sometimes leave behind a sticky residue. With Silicone Clear Gel Tape you don’t have to worry about either!

Product highlights:

  • Medical grade tape
  • Gentle to the skin
  • No pain peel off

Silicone Clear Gel Tape has moderate stickiness, easy to remove, and will not hurt your client when you peel it off.

Ruthie Belle - Super Bonder

The drying speed of the lash adhesive you use will vary depending on the humidity and temperature in your lash room. When the humidity is too low, the drying speed will be too slow. To help speed the drying process of your lash adhesive, you can use the Ruthie Belle Super Bonder

Ruthie Belle Super Bonder adds elasticity to your lash adhesive helping it dry faster and making it more flexible. In addition, it decreases the fumes coming out of the lash glue you used. Fumes usually increase if the humidity is too low

But when you add a few drops of Ruthie Belle Super Bonder, the fumes will decrease and your client will not experience any irritation and tearing. You won’t need a nano mister or a humidifier to balance the humidity, simply use Super Bonder.

Product highlights:

  • Helps increase lash adhesive retention
  • Works with any lash glue
  • Ideal for clients with sensitive eyes
  • Blocks fumes
  • Very convenient

How to Improve Eyelash Extension Retention

In the lashing world, retention refers to the length of time your eyelash extensions last. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee of the exact lifespan of lash extensions. The indicated retention on your lash adhesive’s label is merely an estimation based on the most ideal conditions and the notion you have followed all the guidelines indicated

On that note, there are factors you can control that will affect your client’s retention. However, once they leave your space, it is now their responsibility to look after their lash extensions. But before they head out the door, here are 4 ways to improve your lashing retention:

1. Make sure your products are not expired for retention

The freshness of the lash adhesive you use is a great factor in determining how long the lash extensions last.

Eyelash Extension tools and products need to be replaced to ensure retention. Cartel Lash

Lash adhesives are formulated with cyanoacrylate and other ingredients. As time goes by, the ingredients start to separate and with oxidation lose their efficiency. When using your glue make sure to thoroughly shake your bottle, this will emulsify the ingredients and in turn allow your adhesive to perform at its optimum level.

However, if the lash glue you are using is expired, the ingredients are not as fresh, resulting in weaker bonds and poor retention. So, make sure to check the expiration date and shelf life of your lash glue before using it. Pro tip: label your bottle with the date you opened it and prevent any guesswork.

2. Focus on eyelash prep for retention (clean+primer)

Don’t skip the prep! Having clean eyelashes before lashing is very important to ensure long-lasting retention. Oil, dust, makeup residue, and debris decrease the lash retention and weaken the bond of your lash adhesive. Use an oil-free and extension-friendly cleanser to wash your client’s eyelashes.

Then apply a layer of lash primer to ensure no oil, dust, residue, or debris is left in your client’s eyelashes. A lash primer balances the pH level in your client’s eyelashes which helps improve lash retention.

Prep your client’s eyelashes properly!

3. Teach your clients proper aftercare for retention

Your client’s daily routine is a big reason why their eyelash extensions fall off earlier than expected. Teach your client proper aftercare routines, the do’s and don’ts, and include product suggestions. Make sure to include the ingredients they should avoid as well.

Emphasize the need to clean their eyelashes DAILY. Use the right lash cleanser and mascara wands to comb and remove all the stuck residue and dust that may have built up in their lashes and lashline.

Remind your clients not to dilute products like cleansers if they are not supposed to be diluted just to save money. When a cleanser is diluted even though they are not supposed to, their effectiveness will be decreased. This means the cleansers will not be able to remove all the unwanted debris, oil, dirt, and makeup residue in their eyelashes leading to premature shedding.

4. Work in the optimal environment to increase retention

Use a hygrometer and thermometer to measure the humidity and temperature in your lash room. Check the label of your lash glue. The manufacturers always put the advised ideal room temperature and humidity level the lash adhesive performs the best in.

Make sure the humidity and temperature inside your lash room are within the advised range. Too low humidity will slow the drying process of your lash glue, while if it’s too high, the drying will be too quick. In both cases, the bond will be weak and the lash retention will not last.

Need more retention tips?

Here are a few more helpful tips:

  • Make sure the lash extensions are perfectly parallel to your client’s natural lashes. If the extensions are not fully connected at the base, dirt, debris, and oil will accumulate quickly. The buildup will begin breaking down the bond, causing it to become weak. Ensure your extension bases are placed flush with the natural lash, this will give your adhesive the greatest surface area to bond onto and will also make your sets look seamless.
  • Treat your lash adhesives right. Store and treat your glue well. Your retention depends on it. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines and if possible know when it was made to ensure proper shelf-life storage.
  • Try shock curing. But don’t overdo it. Nano misting is one of the best ways to help improve lash retention. Place the nano mister at least 12 inches away from your client’s face. Do this for 30 seconds max. Anything over 30 seconds will be doing the opposite of shock curing. You don’t want to see beads of water on your client’s lashes.
  • Advise your clients about makeup. Educate your clients to avoid any makeup containing oil. Waterproof eye makeup is difficult to remove and not ideal for extensions. Regardless of whatever makeup your clients decide to use, when removing, clients should be gentle with their eyelashes and never tug at them.

6 Reasons You Should Use a Nano Mister for Lash Extensions

As lash artists, your main goal is to give long-lasting and beautiful eyelashes to your lovely clients. However, lash applications tend to take hours. During the whole process, it might get uncomfortable for both you and your client.

But it is very important to make sure the eyelash glue you use to attach each extension dries properly before going to the next extension. This is usually the part that makes the whole lash application last hours. It is tedious and time-consuming but necessary.

Woman with Long Eyelash Extensions will need to use a nano mister. Cartel Lash

The thing is, your lash adhesive is not done curing (or drying) when your client leaves your lash room, it needs to cure for at least 24 to 48 hours. Your client should avoid getting their lash extensions wet during the curing window to avoid weakening the bond.

Luckily, the lash industry has discovered new and innovative lash extension supplies, tools, products, and accessories that will help extensions last longer, like nano misters, that help speed up the time curing time.

    What is a nano mister?

A nano mister is a small, handheld device that sprays small droplets of water from its nozzle. Its main purpose is to spray water mist over the eyelash extensions that have been recently applied. It aids in effectively and quickly curing the lash adhesive you use.

How does a nano mister work?

Nano misters spray a fine mist of water onto the eyelash extensions evenly. This helps dry and cure the lash adhesive quicker. It might sound unbelievable but it works. The reason for this is the main ingredient in all lash glue, cyanoacrylate, and a scientific process called polymerization. To put it simply, this process is the act of single molecules that are reacting together to form a polymer.

For lash glues, their liquid form will turn to solid if they come into contact with hydrogen, which can be found in water. By using a small and portable nano mister, you can activate the curing process of your adhesive immediately. Instead of waiting for 24 to 48 hours, this process will help to fully cure your adhesives faster.

Water is naturally found in the air. Without the help of any devices, the eyelash glue will eventually dry and cure on its own. However, it will take longer, around 24 to 48 hours before it thoroughly cures. Also, there are times when the air is too dry. In this case, it will be nearly impossible for you to attach eyelash extensions properly while lashing.

If you are still not sold on using nano misters, here are 5 reasons why you should get one!

    1. Lash adhesive cures faster

When you are explaining the whole eyelash extension procedure, you need to let your clients know that they have to prevent their lashes from getting wet for 24 to 48 hours after the application. This way the lash glue you used will properly cure and ensure the bond is strong. However, this is not always convenient.

As a lash technician, you need to consider this and find a way to help the adhesive cure quicker. This is where nano misters can help. This small device lets you add moisture to the air which activates the curing process immediately. It can cut the curing time significantly.

When you are using your nano mister, spray it from a reasonable height over your client’s lashes. Your device will automatically turn off after a specified time. It is usually indicated in your device by the supplier. If not, it usually turns off after 30 seconds.

    2.  A Great Option for Humidity Control

Too much hydrogen or water is not a good thing. If there is too much moisture in the air, it will cure your adhesive too quickly and can also dissolve the solvent, breaking the bond of your adhesive. The use of a nano mister is another way technicians can control the humidity in their lash rooms. It is an easy way to add moisture to the air without going overboard.

    3. Less eye irritation

All adhesives release fumes, some release more than others. During the lashing process, fumes are released into the air. Some clients are especially sensitive to fumes which can cause eye irritation, whereas other clients may not notice a single thing.

Their eyes might turn red, watery, and might even feel a stinging or burning sensation. When the air is too dry in your lash room, the lash adhesive will take a long time to cure, resulting in the presence of more fumes in the air.

If you use a nano mister, the curing process will be quicker and your client’s exposure to fumes will decrease preventing less eye irritations.

    4. Decrease retention

If you are in a location where the air is too dry, you’ll need to increase the humidity in your lash room so your glue can cure properly. A nano mister can do this job. The common problem associated with humidity levels is poor retention.

    5. Reduce the time clients can get their lashes wet

The usual 24-48 hour waiting time for your clients to get their lashes wet, is reduced. Having to be extra cautious during this window can be very inconvenient and sometimes not realistic. Decreasing this waiting period for your clients is greatly appreciated!

    Advantages of a nano mister

There are many advantages of using nano misters, the main one is the quicker curing process of your adhesive making them one of the must-haves for many lash artists. This is very advantageous for both you and your client.

    Disadvantages of a nano mister

Nano misters are perfect for locations where the humidity is too low. However, there are instances where they are not advisable and improper use might cause you more problems than solutions.

If you are in a location where the humidity is too high, using a nano mister will give you more problems. In these cases, we highly recommend against using a nano mister because it will make the adhesive cure quicker than expected. The eyelash extensions will not have the time to properly and fully attach resulting in poor retention.

It might result in shock polymerization. This is when too many water droplets are added to the lashes. It will turn the eyelash extensions white which are not nice to look at.

When the lash adhesives cure at their own pace, the resulting bond holding the extensions to the natural lashes will be more flexible. However, if you shock the curing process, it will make the bond harder and more brittle. Meaning, it will be more prone to breakage.

How to use a nano mister

Before you start your lash application, make sure to fully charge your nano mister. Then, fill the water tank with distilled water. You can also use tap water, but there is a higher chance of hard water build-up. This will wear out your device quicker. That’s why we highly recommend using bottled distilled water.

After you are done air drying your client’s eyelashes, get your nano mister. Hold it upright 8 to 16 inches away from your client’s lashes. Turn it on and move your hand in an even swaying motion across your client’s eyelashes. Do not stop moving your hand. The nano mister will automatically stop at approximately 30 seconds, which is the recommended time. Do not put the device directly at your client’s lashes because it will cause over-saturation.

There are many pros and cons of using a nano mister. It is up to you if you want to use them during your lash application. If you are worried about allergies but don’t want to use a nano mister, you can use LBLA Anti Allergy Gel while lashing or speak to a Cartel Lash product specialist at 📞(604) 437-0011 for recommendations!

How Many Lash Extensions Fall Out a Day

The first thing you need to understand as a lash artist is that lash extensions fall out along with our natural lashes during the lash growth cycle. When the natural lash starts to fall out, the lash extension that is attached will fall along with them.

So, tell your clients not to be surprised when they see extensions fall, this is totally normal and expected.

Number of lash extensions that fall out a day

On average, you lose around 1 to 5 natural eyelashes daily. This means if your lash extensions are attached to your natural lashes, that’s how many lashes will fall out.

This fallout is then replaced with a baby natural lash at the beginning of its lash cycle. However, the speed of growth will vary depending on the person’s age, health, lifestyle, and other factors.

12 common causes of lash extensions falling out

There are various reasons why lash extensions are falling out, here are a few:

    1. The natural lash growth cycle

All hair on a person’s body will undergo a natural growth cycle. It includes Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen. On average the lash growth cycle usually lasts 3 months. Usually, eyelashes are naturally shed when they complete the cycle. This is usually called the shedding phase.

    2. Getting their eyelashes wet right after the eyelash extension application

Lash adhesives need 24 to 48 hours to fully cure. Meaning, your client shouldn’t get their eyelashes wet within this time frame. Otherwise, the lash glue used will bond poorly, becoming weak and won’t last long.

    3. Medical conditions

Medical conditions such as Alopecia Areata, Truchotillamonia Tangle, Chemotherapy, and Thyroid Condition can cause lash extensions to fall out quicker.

    4. Diet

Your diet can also affect eyelashes. A proper diet will make your eyelashes healthy. In contrast, when the body lacks certain nutrients and vitamins, the hair on the body will become brittle and prone to breakage.

    5. Mascara

Wearing mascara, especially waterproof ones, can cause oil, dirt, and other debris to build on the eyelashes and lash line. This can cause the premature breakdown of the adhesive.

    6. Lash serum

Lash serum and other eyelash conditioners help nourish the eyelashes. They help make the eyelashes grow stronger, healthier, and thicker. However, be sure to check the ingredients first. Do not use lash growth serum that contains oils, as it will adversely affect the performance of the adhesive.

    7. Weather

When the environment is windy, your eyes easily water. The person will wipe away the tears which cause friction and potentially cause the eyelashes to fall out. Heat and humidity will also affect the drying and curing process of the lash adhesive you use.

    8. Improper daily aftercare routine

Clients need to properly clean and brush their eyelashes daily to remove all dirt, oil, and leftover makeup to prevent the bond from weakening.

    9. Lash retention of the adhesive you use and improper usage

Check the bonding time of each of the lash adhesives you use. Each bottle has a different bonding time and optimum range for humidity and temperature. Make sure you are familiar with the settings your adhesive needs to perform its best.

    10. Sleeping position

Tell your clients to always sleep on their backs or wear 3D eye masks to protect their lash extensions. If they sleep face down, expect eyelashes to fall out a lot sooner.

    11. Touching or picking the eyelashes too much

Let your clients know to refrain from touching or picking their eyelashes. The fingers contain oils that are harmful to the lash adhesive used and weaken its bond. Touching and picking can become habitual and without even realizing your client will want to pick at their extensions and pull them off prematurely, possibly pulling the natural lash and causing follicle damage.

    12. Application error

As a lash tech, you need to make sure you properly attach each and every extension. Placement and the proper amount of glue are key! Otherwise, the lash extensions will fall out earlier and your clients will not be happy.

If you want to ensure your client can enjoy their beautifully applied lash extensions, you need to explain these factors. Especially when it comes to their aftercare routine.

How to make lash extensions last longer

Here are 3 tips you can tell your clients to help their lovely lash extensions last as long as possible:

    Be gentle handling lashes

It is very important to let your clients know that they should never rub, tug or pick their eyelashes. They should always BE GENTLE when touching their lashes.

This is something a lot of lash lovers overlook especially when they woke up. There are people who unconsciously rub their eyes first thing in the morning.

Brush and clean lash extensions every day

Cleaning and brushing eyelashes daily should always be included in your morning and evening routines. Cleaning the eyelashes will help remove all the dirt, oil, or makeup residue left around your eyelashes and lash line. Also, brushing them will separate individual lashes and preserve the curl.

    Use lash extension friendly products

Choosing the right products for your client’s aftercare routine is important. Oil is one of the biggest culprits to why the bond in the lash adhesive doesn’t last. It causes the bond to weaken and break, leading to premature shedding.

Quality lash extension supplies make lashes last longer. Cartel Lash

Look for oil-free and lash extension friendly products. If your client is using mascara, it is important to not use waterproof! Steer clear of waterproof eyeliner and mascara as they are very hard to remove. While removing them, your client might end up tugging their eyelashes and pulling them out.

Regular maintenance, a proper daily cleaning routine and careful handling can go a long way when it comes to the longevity of your lash extensions.
